15 Days Book Blogging Challenge: Day 7 - Blogging quirks

11 February 2014

Day 7: Talk about your blogging quirks
I have had this blog for 3 years now but have only been active for the last couple of months. However, I have always enjoyed interacting with the rest of the world through the internet, especially through blogs. As you may know, I have a Tumblr blog on which I spend most of my free time. Throughout this period of time, I have developed several blogging habits which you may or not consider as quirks.

1. I always decide the title of my post before I actually start typing the blog post. This helps me to organize my thoughts better.

2. As I have some blogs on my reading-list on Blogger (google friend connect), everytime new posts get published I get to see them all in order from new to old. I tend to read the old ones first before the new ones.

3. I try to always put photos (all my own, unless otherwise stated) on each of my blog post because I am a very visual person.

4. I always write my posts directly on Blogger, but when I am writing a review I save it as a draft and work on it for several days.

5. I try to keep my photos clean and simple, without lots of shakalakaboomboom. I raise high simplicity and I think that simplicity is more.

If you also want to share your own blogging quirks, feel free to enjoy here! And, a picture with the complete questions is below.

Have an amazing week!

15 Days Book Blogging Challenge: Day 6 - Book shopping

26 January 2014
Day 6: Describe how you shop for books
So so so so so so excited to write about this as this is my favourite thing to do: shopping for books!! If you have read my blog post where I wrote my book related confessions, then this will not surprise you. I spend too much money on books! Today through this post I will describe to you how I shop for books. I'll share how I choose which ones to buy, where to buy, and all those stuffs. I strongly believe that each one of us is different which means we all have different habits when it comes to book shopping, so if you are having a good day and want to make my day even better you can always tell me your habits in terms of book shopping on my ask.fm.

In the first challenge (book related confessions) I stated that I enjoy paperbacks more than e-books, which may be the reason why I go to bookshops frequently. Most of the time, I look up which books to buy (on the internet) before I go to the bookshop, so I don't spend too much time doubting which ones to get.
But if I don't know which book to buy, I'd like to browse on goodreads to see what my friends are reading and if there are some that interest me, and of course for good ratings.

In bookstores, I tend to reach out my hand and seek the most appealing book cover, and start reading the synopsis on its back. I know people say "don't judge a book by its cover" (here: in a book context), but oh well, it's always nice to have a nice book cover. I also pay attention to books written by my favourite author (Haruki Murakami, in case you're wondering).
Here are some bookstores I visit: Corman Boekhandel (Belgium), Gramedia (Indonesia), ak.'sa'ra (Indonesia), Kinokuniya (Indonesia), Periplus (Indonesia), and Shakespeare and Company (Paris). Disclaimer: locations stated are the locations I visit. These bookstores can be found in different countries. I visit Corman the most because I live in Belgium.

Each one of us has our own way in terms of book shopping, feel free to share yours on my ask.fm or by joining this challenge:

15 Days Book Blogging Challenge: Day 5 - Tear jerker

21 January 2014

Day 5: Recommend a tear jerker
Today's theme for the challenge is tear jerkers! To be honest, I haven't read any story that made me cry. I have read some that were able to make me emotional and on a bad day, sob. But that was it. I am quite an emotional person and I cry easily but books just don't make me cry, I guess.
To wrap up loose ends, I picked up a book to recommend to you: The Fault In Our Stars by John Green (I mean, who doesn't know this book?!)

The Fault In Our Stars is about a girl named Hazel Grace who was diagnosed with stage 4 thyroid cancer at the age of thirteen, but she has managed to live until now thanks to all the medicines. Her parents urge her to attend a weekly support group for children living with cancer - because Hazel can't leave the house bringing an oxygen tank all around. There is her first time meeting Augustus Waters (Gus), a former basketballer who lost his right leg to osteosarcoma (bone tumor). Gus is close friends with Isaac, who soon will be blind in order to remove cancer from his body. Augustus keeps his eyes on Hazel for quite some time - which makes her feel awkward being stared by such a good-looking boy. Apparently both of them feel attracted enough to each other that it doesn't take long for them to grow closer.
"I'm in love with you," he said quietly
"Augustus," I said.
"I am," he said. He was staring at me, and I could see the corners of his eyes crinkling. "I'm in love with you, and I'm not in the business of denying myself the simple pleasure of saying true things. I'm in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we're all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we'll ever have, and I am in love with you."
Hazel recommends her favourite book to Augustus, An Imperial Affliction by Peter Van Houten, and so does Augustus. He recommends her his favourite, Prince of Dawn, a novelization of a video game. Both Hazel and Augustus become attached to An Imperial Affliction and are dying (you see what I did there? ;)) to know how the story really ends because the story is ended mid-sentence. Hazel's wish has always been to know what happened to the other characters, but her letters to Peter Van Houten never received an answer.

There is this foundation called Genie Foundation, which grants sick children one wish. As Hazel's wish was already used, Gus now uses his wish to go to Amsterdam to visit Peter Van Houten - with Hazel! Although Hazel's living a dream come true, her condition gets worse and it reminds her that cancer's still living in her. Her life can end anytime.
"That's the thing about pain," Augustus said, and then glanced back at me. "It demands to be felt."
Both Hazel and Gus are expecting the worst and so they live their lives to the fullest, spending time with each other everytime. Although Hazel has always been familiar with goodbyes, this time seems so much harder...

//

I mean, this book is just wow. I have enjoyed reading every page of this book and each one of them tore my heart apart with every single phrase. Admittedly I promise it was hard not to fall in love with Gus. And the only thing I was disappointed about is that An Imperial Affliction doesn't really exist </3 I mean John Green, can we just.. (╥_╥)

So this was my tear jerker recommendation for you, if you want to join the challenge, a picture with the complete questions is below.

Thanks for reading, x

15 Days Book Blogging Challenge: Day 4 - Flung across the room?

27 December 2013

Day 4: What's the last book you flung across the room?
Today's challenge confused me a little bit, I didn't really know what it meant.. But I guess I have figured it all out now. I have never physically flung any book across the room, honestly. I've had the urge to do so, but I just knew I wouldn't be able to forgive myself for ruining a book. I've tossed down books out of anger, frustration, and disbelief at a twist or ending though.
The last book that gave me the reaction where I might have actually considered destroying, might probably be Underground by Haruki Murakami. This non-fiction book gave me chills, and it is pretty safe to say that I did a good job not reading the book all in once (I haven't finished it yet).
Underground is a collection of interviews of the victims of the Tokyo gas attack back in 1998. The attack left only 12 people dead, but thousands were injured and many suffered serious after-effects. Murakami interviews the victims and ex-members of the doomsdays cult responsible, to establish precisely what had happened that day.
I could not afford all the feels that I came across every time I read those interviews, let alone reading all of them in one go. Often, after reading some of them, I sat still and realized how truly blessed I am to never have encountered something terrible as that. I am quite excited to finish it, albeit all the sad feels.

So that was the last book I flung across the room - kind of, if you have any book you flung across the room, let me know here if you want to ;) If you want to join the challenge, a picture with the complete questions is below.

I hope you had a merry Christmas, and I am wishing you a very happy New Year '14 guys!
Thank you for sticking with me, x

15 Days Book Blogging Challenge: Day 3 - blogging BFFS + Christmas vlogs

21 December 2013

Day 3: Who are your blogging BFFS?
It is the third day! Today's topic is my blogging BFFS. Well, to start off, I don't have that many friends that own a blog. I've been active on this blog for a couple of months now (6 months to be exact) - indeed I have abandoned this blog for nearly 2 years.

Along the way, I have made a couple of friends that make my blogging experience a lot more fun!

From top left:
First there is Chica, I have made acquaintance with her basically when I found her blog a year ago and just decided to contact her on Twitter. We got along well with each other and when I was on holiday to Indonesia, we had a meet up! (See post here). We both are interested in small things in life and are eager to collect moments and put them in our camera.

Second we have Shella, she is an older cousin of mine. I have learnt so many things from her, and I proudly say that she is one of my role models in life.

Third there is Anasthasia, she is one of my friends I haven't met yet. I discovered her Instagram feed and I instantly fell in love with her art works. I honestly cannot wait to meet her! (The photo is her painting of me)

Fourth we have Nasya! She is my cousin and I absolutely love her blog. She enjoys small things so much and is grateful for every single thing that she comes across.

So they were my  blogging BFFS,  please do check out their blogs! If you want to join the challenge, a picture with the complete questions is below.

Guys, it is finally holiday! I did well on my exams (except maths, of course. ugh), and I am so, so glad it is almost Christmas! Christmas is so much fun in my opinion and I get to see so many happy people, all the pretty decorations, Christmas movies, .. By the way here is a footage of the day we finished our exams - it was 3 days ago, and yes, I was lazy to edit the videos so here you go!

Much love,
Elizabeth

15 Days Book Blogging Challenge: Day 2 - Bedtime reading ritual + Introduction to my YouTube channel

14 December 2013

Day 2: What's your bedtime reading ritual?
Compared to the first challenge, there's actually not much to talk about. I like both sleeping and reading. So you may guess that this was fun for me to talk about. Without more further do, let's hop into it!

Some people absolutely cannot go to sleep without reading first. I, honestly speaking, cannot read a book right before I go to sleep. I basically almost never read books on my bed, because 1. I cannot hold the book properly, 2. I get sleepy and cannot concentrate, 3. I keep being distracted by my phone, 4. If I read a book before sleep there's 99% chance that the book makes me curious which leads me to wanting to finish the book right away (but sadly I need my sleep). If I have class the next day, I control myself and stop reading at midnight or at 00:30. But if I don't, then I mostly just keep reading until my eyes start protesting. I am eager to finish my book (even if it's 3am already) when I've still got less than 50 pages to read. I don't know why, but it just feels kind of weird to close your book when you're almost at the end. Hehe.

So, this was my bedtime reading ritual. If you want to join the challenge, a picture with the complete questions is below.

As you might have noticed from the title, I HAVE MADE A YOUTUBE CHANNEL! I decided to make a YT channel so that I can post some footage of my holidays there, or I can talk about books, etc. By the way please feel free to recommend me which videos to make on here.
When I edited my first video, I swear it was so awkward to see myself talking.... to a camera.
Anyway, I am still excited for more things to come on this blog and on my YouTube channel!

See you! x
Elizabeth

Book review: Wildwood

30 November 2013

BOOK OVERVIEW

Title: Wildwood
Author: Colin Meloy
Genre: Children's novel
Illustrator: Carson Ellis
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Pages: 541

Prue McKeel's life is ordinary. That is, until her brother is abducted by a murder of crows and taken to the Impassable Wilderness, a dense, tangled forest on the edge of Portland. No one's ever gone in - or at least returned to tell of it.

So begins an adventure that will take Prue and her friend Curtis deep into the Impassable Wilderness. There they uncover a secret world in the midst of violent upheaval - a world full of warring creatures, peaceable mystics, and powerful figures with the darkest intentions. And what begins as a rescue mission becomes something much greater as the two friends find themselves entwined in a struggle for the very freedom of this wilderness. A wilderness the locals call Wildwood.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Prue's baby brother, Mac, is abducted by a murder of crows when they were strolling around on the park nearby their home. Prue was devastated and decided to look for him - and that means that she had to go to the Impassable Wilderness, a forest everyone avoided. They didn't even dare talking about it, let stand going inside. But there was nothing else to do than going into the Impassable Wilderness, to save her baby brother.
On her way to the forbidden forest, Curtis, a classmate of Prue's, has been following her out of curiosity. Prue at first ignored and rejected his companion, but before she could send him back, they were separated while fleeing from coyotes.

Prue discovered a whole different world inside Wildwood - she rode on a mail truck to South Wood where she could find help. There she found out about a bureaucracy and a disfunctional government. Prue eventually met the Crown Prince Owl Rex, who suggested her to cross Wildwood and find the Mystics of North Wood, who could help both Prue and Wildwood.
“We are the inheritors of a wonderful world, a beautiful world, full of life and mystery, goodness and pain. But likewise are we the children of an indifferent universe. We break our own hearts imposing our moral order on what is, by nature, a wide web of chaos.”
In the mean time, Curtis was being flattered by Alexandra, the leader of the coyotes army. He got a nice uniform, a sward and all kinds of compliments. Curtis accidentally made the army win during a war against bandits by destroying their howitzer. So he became a coyote war hero. Afterwards he stumbled upon Mac in one of Alexandra's headquarters where Alexandra told him her plans: to sacrifice Mac to the ivy. Alexandra promised that she would share her power with Curtis but when Curtis disagreed, he was imprisoned with some captured bandits and coyotes.

During her flight on the back of an eagle sent by Owl Rex to North Wood, Prue got into an accident and was found by the Bandit King named Brendan who offered her some help. Somehow they were captured by coyotes, Prue got sent to Alexandra while Brendan was imprisoned. Alexandra promised Prue that she would find Mac, so Prue was convinced enough to leave The Wood and go back home - to the Outside.
In the prison, Curtis revealed Alexandra's plans to the prisoners. They all managed to escape.
Back home, Prue learnt about her parent's bargain with Alexandra and she decided to return to rescue Mac.

There’s as much benefit to wishing the world away as there is in demanding a bud to bloom. It’s better to live presently. By living thus, perhaps we can learn to understand the nature of this fragile coexistence we share with the world around us.

I might have failed in writing a good summary of this book; because I just couldn't find a way to summarize everything shortly and not spoil every bit of the story.
The story is so beautifully written and I totally enjoyed everything. The plot was a little bit slow-paced but that was totally fine. I am quite surprised by the difficult words used in this book ;_; I have read some reviews on Goodreads and indeed, I was not the only one. Some even said this book was not age-appropriate.
Even though I enjoyed the story, I spent 3 weeks on reading this book - which rarely happens, the longest time I need to finish a book has always been one week and a half.
The book is full with nice illustrations, which always make it easier to imagine all the things explained in the book. There are maps of Wildwood too! ;)

One thing I sorry about this book is that I actually thought Prue and Curtis would venture the woods together. As a reader, I liked Prue quite much - I just couldn't imagine myself to be as brave if I was twelve years old. I reallyyyyyyy enjoyed Curtis' part, he is so loyal to Prue and he does everything he can to help her out of this situation.

Overall, this book has satisfied me. I might be reading Under Wildwood and Wildwood Imperium as soon as I get the time.

15 Days Book Blogging Challenge: Day 1 - Confessions

26 November 2013
I came across a challenge at Lust and Coffee the other day, and I found that it might be interesting to join ;)! It is a book blogging challenge created by Good Books and Good Wine. On YouTube I've been watching extremely fun videos of people doing tags and challenges (check out: booksandquills, thereadables, ...) and I always find myself wanting to do those sorts of things on my blog but never had the right time to do so, but here I am now! Finally! I won't do the challenges everyday, I will be doing 3 challenges per month - I promise I will do all 15!

Day 1: Make 15 book related confessions.
1. I always plastic-wrap my books, I don't know how this actually became a habit, a habit I always enjoy. When I was 8 years old, I had this comic book called Hai, Miiko! (I don't remember which episode) which was absolutely one of my favourites. One day when I came home from school, I saw my copy of Hai, Miiko! all crumbled and its spine cracked, the cover cut, and just in a terrible state - my baby sister had ruined my copy! I was really mad at myself for not taking care of my favourite comic book. So I guess that since then I always plastic-wrap my books and take a lot of care of them.

2. I enjoy paperbacks a lot more than e-books, compared to paperbacks, e-books are definitely easier to carry around and they don't take a lot of space. But for me, nothing makes me happier than opening a new book, caressing every page and writing my name on the first page. It is weird to say, but the feeling I get when I finish a paperback is different than the one I get when I finish an e-book. You can't fully enjoy a book in electronic form.

3. I spend too much money on books, I admit it. I honestly cannot leave a bookshop without buying a book. I constantly am looking for new books. This causes my reading list to become extremely high.

4. I either finish a book within days or within months, nothing in between. There are books that keep me awake, literally I would sacrifice my sleep for finishing it. But there are also books that are kind of a pain in the ass, which make me rather regret for wasting my time reading them. Books that don't keep me interested enough will probably not be finished in a short period of time. For example, I have been reading Silver Linings Playbook since.... April, I guess. Still haven't finished it yet.

5. Pretty pretty pretty pretty book covers!! Nothing makes me happier than owning a book with a gorgeous cover. Whenever I want to buy a book, I always look for the best-looking-edition. That feels good, you know, reading a pretty looking book in public.

6. I hate cracked spines, I cannot handle seeing people breaking spines... why would you even do that? One day I had bought a new book when a friend of mine came to me, grabbed the book, bent the book back on itself and started reading. WHAT?! I MEAN NO! DON'T DO THAT TO MY BOOKS. I can still hear the sickening sound as a dirty white fissure ruptured along the once virgin spine. (Reader, it's okay, my friend is still alive).

7. I smell my books, this is one of my habits. Yes! I love the smell of books. New books and that 'fresh from the press' smell are great too. Books have always had this intimate scent that is soothing. I also like the scent bookshops have.

8. Sometimes I feel that my life is so empty when I finish a very good book, simply because some books really impact my life, and because the characters are so lovable, and because the book is absolutely beautifully written that it sucks me into another world.

9. I arrange my books according to height, because it makes feel good when I see a clean, tidy bookshelf.

10. I tend to refuse lending my books to people who are no book lovers... I know, I always feel bad when I have to refuse. But I just cannot handle the thoughts of my books being in somebody else's hands, I might be exaggerating but seriously, I can't. I'm so sorry.

11. Book hangovers (T___T), I have difficulties moving on after finishing a really good book, for example I could not move on and I kept whining together with my friends Estefine and Clairine after finishing Perahu Kertas by Dee. I spent the next days thinking about the characters, why the story didn't turn out the way I wanted it, and so on.

12. I tend to start reading a particular book based on people's reviews on it. One day during Dutch lessons we had to review a book. My friend Nathan had reviewed a book called The Solitude of Prime Numbers, and he managed to review it sooo beautifully that I was convinced enough to immediately go to the bookshop and buy the book.

13. I would never want to read a horror book. When you watch a horror movie, you see the ghosts as they're shown in the movie. But when you read a book, you only see the description of the ghosts described by the author. And somehow your brain manages to make you imagine the worst kind of ghosts. Since I am a coward when it comes to anything horror, I won't read any horror book.

14. I read everywhere, in the bus on my way to school, on my way back home, in the train, in the tram, on my bike, lol jokes. Even though my ability to concentrate is 0,0001%, I am still able to read a book in a very crowded place. I can still be lost and just forget the reality. But my weakest point is reading a book when my phone is near.

15. I am mostly disappointed in movie adaptations, because they're never as good as the books. Movies cannot contain every detail of the book, but still. Small details are things that make books more genuine than movies.

Okay guys, this was my book related confessions, I hope this wasn't too much to read and hopefully I didn't ramble too much. If you want to join the challenge, a picture with the complete questions is below.

Signing off, cheers!
